Kay and Aye at Lawrence Welk Talus Caves

Aye was the one who got Kay sign up for the San Diego Urban Exploration Meetup Group. Aye had hiked with the group before. The group introduced me to  the Pacific Crest Trail at the Morena Butte. Husband RN and Aye trespassed the defunct Sycamore Missile Facility with the group from Bridgestone Community Park once.
Kaye and Aye were the first ones at the virtual trailhead of the Lawrence Welk Talus Caves at the non-existent Moss Tree Lane at Hidden Meadows in Escondido. Lawrence Welk, talus caves, and hidden meadows are  by itself stories distinct from the other.

The real Lawrence Welk  was an entertainer originally from Strasburg, North Dakota. A you tuber before his time or long after he died in 1992, his show only featured dance music like waltz, polka and whatever was popular during in his era. He had a band and he played the accordion.  In Escondido, Lawrence Welk seemed more of a business name like the Lawrence Welk Resort that includes a  golf course, a restaurant, a timeshare among others.  Lawrence Welk Talus Caves had been to referred to as the Hidden Meadows Talus Caves.

Aye first heard about Hidden Meadows from Delta Dawn who lives in the area.  Delta Dawn is Pedro's mother. Pedro is a pig who according to Delta Dawn would chase the post man  or any passer by he sees in the neighborhood. The neighborhood, according to Delta Dawn, consists of homes half a mile or more apart.  Delta Dawn lives with Pedro who was bought at Tijuana as a baby or a piglet, a cat named Jing Jing who recently died from diabetes and renal failure, a horse who loved to do several laps on the yard swimming pool on given days, among other animals including a nephew named Diego. Delta Dawn described  what seemed to be an imaginary home and community at Hidden Meadows. Delta Dawn, of course, is the imaginary name Aye gave to Pedro's mother who used to call me for hours on end during the night talking about the same thing all the time.
Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on
Could it be the faded rose from days gone by
And did I hear you say, he was a meeting you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky.

Hidden Meadows has always been Delta Dawn to me. Hidden no more, the meadows do exist and hidden on Delta Dawn's heart could be more than a mother's love to her animals.

The Lawrence Welk Talus Caves at Hidden Meadows are accessed by a locked gate that warns hikers of video cameras and   trespassing in two languages: English and Spanish!
The gate which is about 15 feet away  from somebody's front door is obviously another person's property. The person is Mark Steinbeck.

Mark Steinbeck,  with his dog announcing intruders to his private property, vehemently denied the group's entry who could be there with spray paint and  a fireworks party. Fifteen people waited while Casey, the organizer politely asked Mark if he could talk to him. With garbage bags in hand, Casey was able  to convince Mark about the group's better  intentions: picking up trash in the canyon.

Mark Steinbeck's Talus Caves is more like it. He stood by his trailer acknowledging fifteen other people that included a toddler and a young girl about five years old or younger.

Mike Steinbeck's talus caves are openings between boulders piled up on mountain slopes, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. The boulder piles that the group would be exploring have openings and interconnected passages big enough for local teenage graffiti artists to get into to make rooms for their garish art.
Just past the cave entrance, Kay and Aye among other hikers  were met with a cool breezy feeling. The father of the five year old girl realized that his daughter is claustrophobic from that point on. Nobody could say anything when the toddler riding on his dad's back carrier began to cry. Everyone could only watch their own heads. The cave as in any other cave is a hard hat area.

Two friends slinking down into the boulder passages was unimaginable and would have made an interesting picture to upload.

Aye felt responsible for getting Kay into the crazy meet up. Eva thought she was having a blast. She lives in the area and felt it an accomplishment to be there in the caves. Marta, who last visited Poland, her country of origin, in 2009 moved closer to the boulder wall to make room for everyone who made to the demon room.

Aye wondered why the bottommost area of the cave, 30 feet underground was called the demon room. For a brief moment, Aye felt good about being a glow in the dark. But she is not a glow worm, not in her life.
