Walker Preserve, Santee

Image
The historical artifact is called a sand dredging tool. Along with some interpretive signs like information about the local flora and fauna of the newly opened preserve, the place was teeming with hikers and bikers of all ages on a Saturday morning. Wilfredo, the organzer of the San Diego International meet-up group also invited Robin, a director of a   San Diego River conservancy group in the Lakeside-Santee area to tell us more of the newly opened preserve.  The trailhead at Magnolia Avenue in Santee stretches 1.3 miles into the eastern trailhead by the Lakeside baseball court. The path that was opened to bike riders, equestrians and hikers barely a year ago is fenced with wooden poles. On the south side is the San Diego River and the north side is a residential area teeming with backyard lemon trees.  The preserve is named after the previous owners of the property: the Walkers. According to Robin, the city of Santee along with the US Fish and Wildlife Service have been...

Spring hasn't sprung in Idyllwild

I only drove myself to Idyllwild once. That was after I insisted to Xing that the way to Idyllwild from San Diego is through state route 79 north. The next few times that I went to Idyllwild, I carpooled, the last time,  I think was with Ernest Sato. My babe who had enough of Überring, to my surprise, agreed to drive me on St. Valentine's Day since he's never been to this Southern California hiking mecca. So I navigated him into  SR 79 south from Temecula, then SR 371 into SR 74 and finally SR 243 where Idyllwild is. I was there to look for pussy willows.  I was hiking with Che, Maria, Tim and some others of the Southern California Hiking and Photography group at the Devil's Slide Trail when I first encountered pussy willows. I remember how Maria LOL'ed when I told her that the pussy willows would go well with blue dicks. Since then I had always been on the lookout for pussy willows.  I didn't see any pussy willows this time around. I was not...

Trail Blazing and Blue Dicks

Image
I haven't had enough from yesterday's riding off the Miramar Reservoir paved 5-mile loop. So I went back to the dirt trail at the Los Penasquitos Canyon Open Preserve where almost two weeks ago, I blazed the trail for blue dick bulbs. I also planned to cross the creek on Prius Iscariot, like a pro! After making an assessment of the creek, I decided to use Iscariot more of a walker. Nobody saw me cross the creek on foot using a mountain bike as a walker. But somebody pass me stopped contemplating some monkey business with the blue dicks. "Is everything OK?" Yesterday at the Miramar Reservoir as I caried my Iscariot into the paved loop, a lady asked me if I needed help. I was too embarrassed to ask the lady to take my picture using my cellphone.  I do love riding the trails. All the humping and pumping is better than sex!
