Red Rock Canyon of Orange County
I am back in Orange County and prepared to come upon a concrete wall inscribed with Red Rock Canyon, in the same way that I came upon Turtle Rock.

Red Rock Canyon has been nicknamed as Orange County's Mini Grand Canyon by another blogger. Patty, the Cub Scout pack leader parent more of associated the red tinged canyon with the more popular ones in Utah, such as the Bryce Canyon.
To find Red Rock Canyon, know the exact address of the Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. This would be 26701 Portola Parkway, Foothill Ranch, CA. I did not bring a Fastrak Transponder and I had to go online to pay a toll fee for going through Highway 241 after exiting from I-5 into Oso Parkway. Highway 241 is also known as the Foothill Transportation Corridor and a toll road that would not take cash nor a credit card.
From the Vista Lookout at the end of Mustard Road Trail, Red Rock Canyon looked like a volcanic crater to me. This ancient rock canyon is believed to be originally formed from deposits on the bottom of the shallow sea that once covered the area. Somewhere in the backdrop is the Santiago Peak and the southern backdrop further east is the Riverside County portion of the Cleveland National Forest.

The network of trails and canyons is officially referred to as the Limestone Canyon and Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. A brief history of the park notes that the land comprising the park was once part of the two adjacent Mexican land grants from the 1840's known as Rancho Canada de los Alisos and Rancho Lomas de Santiago. Rancho Canada was acquired by Dwight Whiting in 1885 and Rancho Lomas which became the Limestone Canyon was acquired by James Irvine in 1866. The Borrego Canyon Trail was more of the wilderness area and the Red Rock Canyon was more in the Limestone Canyon areas.
On a clear day, Santa Catalina Island is said to be seen from the 360-degree Mustard Road Vista Lookout. The 2.8 mile Mustard Road Trail is considered one of the difficult trails.
According to the Red Rock Canyon Interpretative Association, the red tinged of some rocks is due to the presence of iron oxide or hematite. Red Rock Canyons which are older than God, about 180 to 190 million years old are constantly exposed to elements causing its iron minerals to oxidize or rust thereby resulting in multi colored rocks in red, orange and brown hues.

I asked Patty the cub scout pack leader parent if there is any cave in the area. She never heard of any but she did tell me that not far from the area in the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park is the Dripping Cave also known as the Robbers' Cave.
